Incredible photos by our seniors. Veniamin reportedly turned up at the barrister's home unannounced at the height of Melbourne's gangland war and warned her about her allegiances.

One theory was Italian organised crime figures suspicious of her activities sent the feared hitman to visit her. It is one of dozens of incidents likely to be covered by the royal commission into the female lawyer who turned on her clients. Veniamin was just 28 in March when he was shot dead. He was the chief suspect in five gangland murders and was Carl Williams' trusted bodyguard. Williams, who was bludgeoned to death in jail by a cell mate six years later, was never much good at picking mates.

Veniamin had blown away two of his best friends before 'mate' Domenic 'Mick' Gatto ended his life in the back of a pizza shop. At the time, Gatto was the head of the notorious Carlton Crew, who ruled Melbourne's seedy underworld. Gatto's good mate Graham 'The Munster' Kinniburgh had been killed just months earlier.

His killer was sentenced to life in jail last year. The mail was in that Veniamin had pulled the trigger. It was bad mail. A man, who cannot be named, was last year jailed for life over the murder. It had been on the orders of Williams who wanted Kinniburgh dead due to his association with the Moran family. During his murder trial, the former boxer said he had saved Veniamin's skin more than once. He went on to say Benji had told him at a party that he had indeed killed his mates. He said, ''You're a mate of mine. What are you talking about? You grew up with them. When he asked Veniamin about the death of the Munster, Benji swore black and blue he hadn't pulled the trigger.

By this time, Gatto was a marked man by Williams, with word he had placed a contract on his head. Veniamin was the 25th victim of the bloody gangland war, which was to become the subject of the popular Underbelly television series.

The man who really pulled the trigger on 'The Munster' is taken to jail after being found guilty of his murder in the Supreme Court of Victoria last year. Mick Gatto above refuses to publicly speak about the man he was accused of shooting dead. Gatto met Williams and Veniamin at Crown Casino on December 22, , in a bid to bring peace to the streets. At the pre-Christmas meeting, he told Williams this was not his war, but the crazed killer would not stop until all his perceived rivals were dead.
