Her personal assistant Crystal Kimberly Elise has two children by an alcoholic, mentally disturbed, physically abusive war veteran. Her kids are babysat by neighbor Gilda Phylicia Rashad , the apartment-building manager.
Across the hall is the brash, brassy Tangie Thandie Newton , whose liberal sexuality runs rampant with multiple one-night stands.
Her teen sister Nyla Tessa Thompson , who wants to study dance, learns she's pregnant, which won't go over well with their mother Alice Whoopi Goldberg , obsessed with her cult-ish religion. Nyla's dance teacher Yasmine Anika Noni Rose is being courted by a man who may not be as friendly and charming as he seems. Meanwhile, Juanita Loretta Devine , a nurse and head of a women's support group, contends with her philandering boyfriend. She wears a costume and head scarf reminiscent of the iconic design of the original Broadway production signally captured on the Bantam Books edition of the play.
Yasmine adores her girls, and her belief in the transformations of art helps them finish high school and go to college. Then, she begins to rebuild her life. Some feel like caricatures. One of the few monologues that celebrate female sexuality turns too quickly into a victim narrative.

Some of the other reviews were surprising. At no point did I feel the movie to be slow. In fact, I thought the movie constantly pounded on our emotions to almost a point of exhaustion.
