Technically if her blood was made thicker, the blood flow throughout her body would be slowed down, and natural human functions would shut down. Metaphorically she wants the flow of remorse and pity to be cut off, and to be unhuman. However, it also shows that naturally she could be a decent person, because if she was all bad she wouldn't be pleading to dark forces to block up her consciece and pity.
Lady Macbeth wants them all to be "blocked" so that she can commit any evil deed without remorse, so that no natural feelings can divert her from her original intentions. Lady Macbeth pleads that her breast milk be turned to bile. A womans breasts have the natural function to feed, and is a source of life for a growing baby, while bile is a bitter, foul green coloured substance made in the liver which provides no nourishment.
This again links back to the central theme of the reversal of nature. Lady Macbeth also pleads. He reports that Macbeth has fought bravely and has defeated the enemy. He orders them to order the execution of the present Thane of Cawdor and strip him of his title and present the title to Macbeth.
After Duncan names Malcolm as the next king, something which Macbeth verbally praises but secretly curses, Duncan declares he will go to Inverness Macbeth's castle to celebrate Macbeth's bravery and new title. He is a thoughtful king which is why he takes the time to go to Inverness to thank Macbeth again. What is the significance of Lady Macbeth's " unsex me " scene? She denounces the feminine qualities that make her weak.
She wishes she were a man so she could have power to do what she thinks Macbeth can't. What is Lady Macbeth's weakness? Once the sense of guilt comes home to roost, Lady Macbeth's sensitivity becomes a weakness, and she is unable to cope.
Significantly, she apparently kills herself, signaling her total inability to deal with the legacy of their crimes. How is Lady Macbeth presented as a powerful woman? Being a female herself, Lady Macbeth commands the 'sprits' to 'unsex [her] here,' so she can rid herself of her female traits so she can be more male and thus powerful enough to commit evil.
She becomes a symbol of greed and triggers the ambition in her husband that will eventually lead to both of their downfalls. In her famous soliloquy, Lady Macbeth calls upon the supernatural to make her crueler in order to fulfill the plans she conjured to murder Duncan.
She desires an internal transformation, but not an external one. She tells Macbeth to do the same when she exclaims, "Look like th' innocent flower, But be the serpent under 't" 1. In this way she acts as a bully towards her husband. Ethan Hawke describes Lady Macbeth as Macbeth's "partner-in-crime".
This is true in that she is the driving force behind Macbeth's ambition and eventual serial-killing mindset. One such is the aforementioned idea of bullying. Towering over the character of Macbeth, Charlotte Cushman played the role in this way. As Lady Macbeth, "…she knew what she wanted, she knew how to get there, and she knew how to get her husband there. Whatever Lady Macbeth is perceived as however, it is no doubt that she is a woman of passion and pursuit. However, as Macbeth becomes more ruthless, she seems to be falling apart at the seams. Had she always intended for the mass murder of the Scottish court?
Or was this just the unforeseen consequence of a single selfish motive? Rupert Goold's movie adaptation of Macbeth presents an interesting take on the medieval play. As the movie and characters progress, we witness Lady Macbeth's emotional depreciation. However, in the movie, we also have a visible aspect in which we can see her physical deterioration as well. She begins to look frailer and fatigued which adds to the effect of her sleep walking scene.
These notions are such that are unable to be sought in a simply read adaptation. This is the point in which we see Lady Macbeth at her most vulnerable. In the times of Shakespeare, this, along with chastity and modesty, was the defining trait of a woman. Lack of compassion was considered a deviation for woman.
Lady Macbeth also defines her through this essense of femininity. As a woman she lacks cruelty needed to betray and kill her guest and meet the consequences getting rid of witnesses etc. She also lack cruelty to use her husband more like an inanimate tool, manipulating him and pressing his vulnerable points.
She wants to be the most cruel, the most ruthless, not just cruel enough to conduct the plan. This tells us a lot, foreshadowing the latter events. This image, portrayed in a short quote, makes Lady Macbeth an iconic example of an Evil Queen that is exploited in mythology and fairy tales.
The people of Middle Ages saw the woman who throws off her passive feminine traits as a horrible aberration that is clearly dangerous, even more so than men of her status and intentions. For the medieval audience, this brilliant monolog of Lady Macbeth is the the point of no return, her moral event horizon that clearly defines her as the character beyond any redemption.
