The prevalence of this value system is evident in the way that upright men such as Utterson and Enfield avoid gossip at all costs; they see gossip as a great destroyer of reputation. Hyde are the same person. Jekyll is a scientist who, while searching for a way to separate his good self from his bad impulses, creates a potion that transforms himself into a man without a conscience.
These basic elements cannot be separated because man is defined by the conflict within his inner nature and how he deals with this duality. Mr Hyde is described as devilish, evil and a criminal mastermind. He is described as respectable, so that as we read it we know we are looking out of the eyes of an honest and plain man, that is known for being the last respectable person that a down going man would talk to. This means we get an unbiased view. Utterson is also presented as dull and lonely, but also at times he is eminently human.
This shows a hint of duality straight away, which foreshadows a large theme in the book. Stevenson presents Mr. Utterson as a plain man, he speaks only when necessary and acts like the typical gentlemanly the era. As a lawyer he is a respectable man, he would have been relied on and would not have struggled with money. He is also religious which would be respected at the time.
He often seems emotionless and is described as dusty which adds to his role of not being given too much attention so we focus on Jekyll and Hyde. Stevenson presents Mr Utterson as an authoritative figure and a typical gentleman of the Victorian era. He is also considered a gentleman and his qualities do not always match them as he gossips qietly and asks questions about others towards mr enfield who is also considered to be a gentleman.
He is presented as a typical gentleman who have authority in the Victorian society. He seems to keep a lot to himself and show little signs of emotion which could be due to his reputation as a lawyer. Also Stevenson could be exploring the views of gentlemen in the victorian era. In the opening chapter of the strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Stevenson has presented Mr Utterson as a respectable Victorian gentlemen but is made quite boring.
This is because his wife made Stevenson burn his first draft. People believe that Stevenson made it too explicit so his wife made him take those things out. For me in chapter one, there is a feel that something is missing which would add to detail. Also Victorian gentleman would go out late at night to go to brothels and bars where they can show there animal side to them which all humans have and not act so civilized.
That is why Stevenson has portrayed Mr Utterson in a boring way. Stevenson has presented Mr Utterson as having a serious nature which, I think, is due to his job as a lawyer. On close reading it is clear that Stevenson reveals the hypocrisies of the Victorian society as much through Utterson as Jekyll. Nonetheless, by the light of day, they must all throw up a great pretense that they are above such things, damning and judging any that take part in the charade.
